Doris Fort Brunson
MBHS Staff 1959 - 1998

Nov 1935 - Oct 2015

Doris Fort Brunson of Myrtle Beach passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 following a short illness.

She was born November 18, 1935 in Sumter, SC, the daughter of Ben Fort and Elizabeth Williams Fort Gammon.   She married the love of her life, James E. Brunson, in 1953, and the family moved to Myrtle Beach in 1959. She worked at Myrtle Beach High School for 34 years before retiring in 1998. While there, she was the surrogate mother for multiple generations of students, taking them to the emergency room for stitches when needed, and offering friendship and advice to all that asked.

Her family is a founding charter family of Ocean View Baptist Church, where she served on numerous boards and committees, and played piano and organ while the church was young. She instilled her love of music to her children, encouraging them to study piano and voice. Her love of reading led her to membership in Chicora Book Club and the MBHS Retirees Book Club. The friendships she had through these clubs were dear to her heart and among the most cherished that she enjoyed.

Since her retirement, Mamama enjoyed spending time with her 4 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents, and is survived by her husband, James, of Myrtle Beach, her two children, Ed (Marcia) and Beth, both of Myrtle Beach. In addition, granddaughters Megan Brunson, along with her mother Melissa Griffin, of North Augusta, Emily (Scott) Rouse of Palm Harbor, FL, Allison (Jason) Petralia of Greer, and Erin Jones of Greenwood, along with 3 great-grandsons and 2 great- granddaughters. She also leaves many dear friends, like Bill and Amy Moore, Martha Day, the Askins family, her Sunday School class, and her fellow retirees from Myrtle Beach High School.

The family will be receiving friends and guests at McMillan-Small Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:30 until 7. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 2PM at the funeral home.
