Daniel (Dan) P. Gray, 76 passed away, Tuesday April 10, 2018 at Vibra Hospital of Charleston in Mount Pleasant, SC. He was born July 16, 1941 in Myrtle Beach, SC a son of the late Philip and Esther Nance Gray. An Horry County native whose family roots in the Waccamaw area date back to the 1730s, Gray attended Myrtle Beach public schools graduating from Clemson University with a bachelor's degree in industrial management in 1963. After a brief employment with Southern Railroad and serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a rifle company platoon sergeant, he returned to Myrtle Beach and became president of Grayco Steel Corporation, which for more than 50 years was a prominent structural steel and prison equipment contactor in the Carolinas. He was owner of the Dan Gray Company, a Myrtle Beach management firm with interests in golf course development and commercial real estate and managing member of River Oaks Golf Plantation. He has served in numerous civic leadership capacities as past President of the Chicora Rotary Club, past Vice President of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and past Chairman of the Board of the Horry County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Gray served on the executive committee of the Carolina Bays Parkway Task Force and has received the Realtor Image Award of the Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors. His expertise in public affairs has been recognized through his work as past Chairman of the Horry County Planning Commission, past Chairman of the Horry County Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee, past Vice Chairman of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Advisory Committee and past member of the S.C. Hall of Fame Board of Directors and he was currently a member of the Horry County Solid Waste Authority. Gray was the first Chairman of the Board and President of the North South All-Star Football Game Committee. In 1990, Governor Carroll Campbell appointed him to the S.C. State Private Industry Council. He was named chairman of the Waccamaw Regional Private Industry Council by in 1994. In 1996, Gray was appointed to the State Job Training Coordinating Council by Governor David Beasley and received the Volunteer of the Year Award for the State of South Carolina by the council in 1997. In 2001, Gray was appointed to the S.C. State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education, and in 2003 became a member of the Horry Georgetown Technical College Foundation Board. Gray also served on the boards of Helping Hand and Waccamaw Regional Education Center and was a founding and long-time member of Ocean View Baptist Church and 50-year member of Seaside Masonic Lodge 419, Scottish Rite Masons and Omar Shriners also serving as past Chairman of the Myrtle Beach Shrine Club Circus and a past Director General of the South Atlantic Shrine Association. In 2016, Gray was awarded an honorary associate degree in public service from Horry-Georgetown Technical College for 50 years of association with the College. Survivors include his wife, Denise Gray of Myrtle Beach, SC; his children, Danny Gray, Roger Gray and wife Becky, Danette Gray and Wayne Gray and wife Sherri, all of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kristin Harper of Williamston, SC, Michael Mittan of Myrtle Beach, SC, Malcolm Johnson of Myrtle Beach, SC and Tamera Ballard of Myrtle Beach, SC; a brother, Bob Gray and wife, Karen of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Nelda Ball and husband, Dan of Columbia, SC and Julia Gray of North Charleston, SC and fifteen grandchildren, Lance Gray, Holly Gray, Mabry Gray, Hope Gray, Spencer Gray, Heath Gray, William Gray, Carly Sincavitch, Sidney Gray, Greyson Ballard, Jacob Johnson, Teagan Mittan, Linkyn Hammond, McKenzie Mahaffey and Harper Johnson. The family will greet friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home Friday April 13, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 PM. Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Ocean View Baptist Church with burial to follow at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery with Military and Masonic Honors.
